Raise Yourself Up

Raise yourself up, sunflower
as if you were a rose

In which case men
would have reason enough
to love you

Yellow in parts
and thin
with arms reaching
but otherwise bound
to the earth

Born from the dirt and
shaped among the dirt
then returned to the dirt

And on warm days
I have thoughts
of you, sunflower

Placed along
the windowsill

Smiling, but sad
looking to the sun

Will it rain today?
Or will the sun fail us?

Will you wilt under its defeat, I wonder?
Or will you smile and allow me that little?

“Take your thoughts,”
you say,
“from this flower”

“And your heart
so moved
to where it
can be
loved”
