A Less Demanding Heart

I think I could learn
to enjoy your love
but only if it were
less demanding
and only if
I were
allowed
to spend
long periods
of the day
alone
and
uninterrupted

Down

At night I think of these things –
dark alleyways and
crows in summer fields;
a broken taillight
that follows me everywhere I go;
a body of indifference
that bends shadows behind me;
lies and indiscretions that make
criminals of otherwise good souls;
and in the deepest oceans there
are fish that have never seen the sun
and there are tides that chase after the moon
and even Jesus Christ
was betrayed and lied to
so why should I
or you
or anyone else
feel special when the love doesn’t hold
and the strange calm of defeat sets in

Love, No Love

And now I know
that I am a terrible person

because you have told
me so a hundred times over

and now I know that I never loved you

because you have told
me so hundred times even more

what I am is a liar
who I am is the person
who destroyed your life

I’m disgusting
I’m horrible
I’m selfish
I’m immature
I’m irresponsible

I’m deserving only of a thousand knives to stab at my body
and a thousand steel pins to bleed out my soul, rotten and sick
as it must be – a vile congregation of animal parts
and animal wants

All my love has ever accomplished is to destroy those it touches.

In Season And Out

In spring I shall
find you in bloom
and in the autumn
months I will wait for you

be a lily, I say!

be a rose
or the crown of a sunflower
be the head of a marigold
be fair and sweet, I say
and I shall love you

come to me
naked
with
glistening
flesh
and
golden breasts
swelling like the tides

be a teasing beauty to exhaust me
be a body dressed in coral to remind me
of the hostile waters in which
I first came upon you in

come to me as a rose, I say
come to me,
in season and out,
the kissable body of summer
and the sleeping hearth of winter

come to me, I say
as a sunflower –
as a rose! –
and I shall love you forever
